Consumer Culture Theory analysis of the portable storage industry
This research examines how financial engineering transforms essential service industries from consumer support to systematic vulnerability creation. Through Consumer Culture Theory analysis of the portable storage industry, we document "vulnerability industrialization"—systematic marketplace design that creates consumer powerlessness independent of individual characteristics. Mixed-methods analysis of 2,500+ consumer reviews across five platforms, legal settlement documentation ($1.6M), and ownership structure mapping reveals how debt pressure (34.7x debt-to-EBITDA) correlates with systematic targeting of vulnerable populations during life transitions.
